How Simon Sinek’s ‘Start with the why’ & storytelling helps your business grow faster.

Most of us have watched Simon Sinek talk passionately about why we should Start With The Why. If you’re not familiar with the concept, give it a watch, it still gives me goosebumps. But why should you combine Start with why & storytelling to help your business grow faster?

If you haven’t seen the Start With The Why concept:

Before I share how a combination of storytelling and Start With Why helps your business grow faster, here’s what you need to know about Start With Why.

Start With Why encourages businesses to tell your customers why they should buy from you using the maxim:

People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.

-Simon Sinek

Putting this into real practice using a computer retailer as an example, this is how businesses traditionally apply their brand message:

We make great computers. They’re user friendly, beautifully designed and easy to use. Want to buy one?

– Simon Sinek

Nothing much wrong is there? But read it again. Does it really stand out? Is there any true emotion? Does it differentiate from your competitors who are all saying the same thing?

This is how Apple position’s their why:

With everything we do, we aim to challenge the status quo. We aim to think differently. Our products are user friendly, beautifully designed, and easy to use. We just happen to make great computers. Want to buy one?

-Simon Sinek

Apple’s brand message makes us think ‘differently’, challenging the status quo, subtly aligning its customers with why they should buy.

Their brand message tells the story, their aims and why Apple designs computers, tablets, mobiles and Mac computers. Apple’s customers read this message and find it aspirational.

So how does ‘Start with why‘ & storytelling help your business grow faster?

Whilst Start With The Why highlights the concept of ‘People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it,’ storytelling takes you to the next stage how to deliver the why

Storytelling shows you how to create your ‘why’ so that customers listen to you encouraging business leaders to clarify their brand message that clearly tells their customers 3 things:

  1. What does your business do?
  2. How does it help your customers?
  3. Why should a customer buy from you?

Storytelling is a marketing framework helping you position your brand message as the guide encouraging you to understand your customers’ need, what they want to achieve and how you can help them.

So here’s a plan:

  • Watch this Ted Talk
  • Write Why customers should buy from you
  • Create your Brand Story making it easier for your customers to do business with you.

If you’re too busy running your business and don’t have the time to create your Brand Message [but know you need to stand out above your competitors], we can help you with that.
